Our most popular subwoofer cable has always been the Chord Crimson. Its high quality conductors and excellent shielding means that it performs well, particularly over the longer lengths that are often required for subwoofer connections. The new Crimson VEE 3 cable, with its heavier gauge conductors and superior shielding, works even better and this is still a high quality and cost effective option. That said, earlier this year we re-visited subwoofer cables and experimented extensively in our Demo Room. This was done because of the revision to Crimson, Cobra and Chameleon cables. What we found was that while the Crimson VEE 3 was hard to fault, the Cobra VEE 3 brought a noticeable level of precision, helping to define the start and end of notes and the Chameleon VEE 3 added to this by improving the dynamic performance as well.
If you have a high quality home cinema or you are using a subwoofer cable as part of a stereo system, both the Cobra VEE 3 and the Chameleon VEE 3 would be well worth considering, and like the Crimson VEE 3, both have extremely effective shielding, making them ideal for longer runs.
“This doesn’t just bring extra detail and definition, it’s easier to hear the tone and pitch as well.”
The last time we revisited subwoofer cables, the Chameleon VEE 3 showed us, in a rather explicit way, just how important subwoofer cables can be. In the right system, the extra definition and sense of dynamics that the Chameleon VEE 3 can bring, leads to a really compelling and immersive experience.
The Chameleon VEE 3 Subwoofer cable uses 3 sets of silver-plated, FEP insulated conductors and is fitted with direct silver-plated VEE 3 RCA plugs.
The high frequency effective shielding means that the Chameleon will deliver the same degree of precision and definition regardless of length.
This is the subwoofer cable to try in any serious home cinema and if you are using a subwoofer as part of your music system, then there’s a good chance that the Chameleon VEE 3 will help to bring a better coherence and definition to the music you play.
The Chord Chameleon VEE 3 uses Chord’s established Chameleon SilverPlus cable. The conductors though have been re-configured into a single signal and dual return configuration to improve definition and timing. The multi-stranded silver-plated oxygen free copper conductors are insulated with FEP, a combination of materials that improve signal transfer at frequency extremes. A cotton fibre conductor wrap reduces mechanical noise and a fully floating high frequency effective, high-density braid and foil shielding combination minimises signal loss through interference. The shields are surrounded by soft PVC to further reduce mechanical noise and this is protected by a hard PVC outer casing.
The Chameleon VEE 3 is fitted with Chord’s custom VEE 3 RCA plugs. The new design of the ABS outer shell and the unique silver-plating process applied to the contact areas, improves signal transfer across a wide frequency range. The signal return surround provides a secure high-pressure contact with all types of RCA sockets. The centre pin is insulated with PTFE and the design of the plug and ABS outer shell provides good strain relief without compressing the cable and compromising performance.

We were surprised at just how much of an improvement the Chameleon VEE 3 makes when it is used as a subwoofer connection. It wasn’t just definition, there was a greater sense of dynamics and with this an improvement in overall coherence, particularly noticeable with music. If your system is being used for both movies and music, the Chameleon VEE 3 should be give serious consideration when it comes to choosing subwoofer cables.
